This Full-Day Seminar led by Jon Fennell will explore our hydrologic systems and the management tools that other jurisdictions are using to ensure that water is managed as an integrated system. Using examples of leading-edge initiatives from around the world, Jon will explore the opportunities for Alberta communities to mitigate risk and ensure water security by harnessing the water resource wealth in a changing climate.

Case Studies: This session will explore alternative water management approaches (aquifer storage and recovery), climate hydrology and risk management, and integrated water management.

Workshop & Interaction: These Workshops are knowledge rich and hosted in intimate relationship building settings - where our Seminar Leaders can provide for candid discussions about the state of the environment (political/environmental). We encourage folks to participate in setting the tone of the day and bring along your colleagues for what is sure to be a very engaging professional development experience.

Workshop Exercise: Participants will be engaged in an interactive session of risk mapping identifying key drivers, stakeholders, and components necessary for an integrated water management strategy.

Seminar Leader Dr. Jon Fennell

Dr. Fennell brings over 20 years of experience as an environmental hydrogeologist, and 25 years as a practicing consultant in the natural resource sector. Jon has been directly involved in the analysis of environmental impacts and cumulative effects associated with respect to large-scale resource developments in Alberta and abroad.  In addition to his efforts to support industry and municipalities, Jon’s involvement with the Government of Alberta over the last 6 years has provided him with a keen insight to the developing regulatory environment surrounding water in Alberta.  Much of this work has focused on the cumulative effects from various development scenarios, and the use of risk-management tools and approaches to inform effective decisions regarding resource development, environmental protection and trade-off analysis.  Jon currently sits on the Board of Directors for the Bow River Basin Council (a WPAC under the Water for Life Strategy) and is chair of the Monitoring and Modeling Sub-committee.
